Though for http://www.grokker.com/

http://www.grokker.com/applet.html?query=cat

It is quite good

1. Similar topic can be clustered together

2. Can zoom in to have a closer look at each cluster

3. Further interactions are:

a. OnMouseOver each individual record of the search results (the small circles or squares) description and other info is displayed

b. The result and the visualization can be customized (using the tool underneath: day, rank, square/circle, color)

c. By choosing individual record, similar entries that are extracted from the same website are shown

Drawback:

1. When zoom in for further study, the relationship between the cluster under further study and the original search result can be shown (unless user go “Back” or “Top”) à I think it looses some of the meaning of the finding

2. It seems to me that it is only useful for clustering data but not quite as useful for other purposes (eg. Display the frequency dimension, or rank for each individual record of the search result). However, I am not quite sure on this one yet

Grokker is a really good visualisation tool.

As Brenda was saying, I think it needs an extra component on the left which tracks the navigation. Maybe in a list. The very top of list being highest level.

You shouldn't be intimidated by the quality of thoroughness of grokker. It may be a big task, but it's quite feasible to build something like this for the data mining project.

It is remotely possible that the developers could wrap this java applet as a plugin for the data mining project.

I agree with todd. This product is more than useful. Its indisspensible in case you haven't seen how bad search engines results are these days for anything except for e-commerce. grokker really helps curb this problem in my opinion in a big big way. I just wished they release a grokker interface to Amazon next. the visual layout makes all the difference. so much easier to get to the content. it is the future.
